Questions
Is it really free?
Yes — the counter costs nothing, needs no account, and has no limit on how many exports you count. The $5 only comes in if you later decide to turn your chat into a keepsake.
Is it private — what leaves my device?
Nothing. Your export file is read in your browser’s memory and never uploaded to any server. The counting happens entirely on your own device, and closing the tab clears everything.
Which apps are supported?
WhatsApp chat exports (the .txt file, or the .zip if that’s how your phone saved it) and Messenger conversation downloads (the message_1.json file from a message storage or Accounts Center download).
Why doesn’t the count match the number on my phone?
Your phone’s number includes things the export doesn’t — deleted messages, media-only messages marked “media omitted,” and system lines. The counter counts the actual text messages present in your export file, which is the number worth bragging about.
