Story of Us read & kept on your own device

The wedding-morning gift that's already written.

The registry handles the toaster. It doesn't handle the personal gift — the one that says something no store can. Every wedding tells the same story: how the two of you fell in love. Usually it's told from memory, at the rehearsal dinner, with the details going soft at the edges. Yours doesn't have to be. It's sitting in your message history, verbatim: the first hello, the weeks you couldn't stop talking, the pet name that started as a typo. Story of Us reads your own chat export and turns it into a short keepsake drawn from your real words — the love story, told back to you.

Why it fits a wedding

Two reasons, and they're both about timing. First: the wedding-week gift. Wedding week has no bandwidth for errands and no patience for shipping — once your chat export is in hand, the keepsake itself builds in about a minute, with nothing to order, wrap, or track. Get the export early in the week, though, not the morning of — especially on Messenger, where Meta has to prepare your message-storage download and a long history can take a while. Second: the story itself. Print the PDF for the memory table, read a page at the rehearsal dinner, or tuck it into the card you hand over before the ceremony. It's the "how we met" story, drawn from what you actually said — the keepsake finds the patterns in your real history (your pet names, your busiest year, the hour you talk most) and writes them up as a short illustrated story.

Where do you two talk?

Pick whichever app holds the history you want to use — each one walks through exporting it, screen by screen, before you ever get to the keepsake itself.

What you get

A short, private keepsake built only from your own history — pet names and inside jokes it noticed on its own, your year-by-year rhythm, your busiest hour, the words you reach for without thinking. You read it on your screen, then you can download it as a PDF to keep or print yourself, no subscription and nothing shipped. It's ready in about a minute.

Give it on the day

Export your chat early in wedding week — give Messenger extra lead time, since Meta prepares that download — then build the keepsake the night before the wedding, or the morning of, over coffee, while the other one is getting ready. Read it together on a screen, then hand over the printed PDF tucked into a card. And because nothing ships, there's no "arrives after the wedding" risk: it can't be out of stock or get lost in the mail. We don't print or mail anything — the wrapping is yours.

To get your messages ready, follow the export guide for your app — iMessage, WhatsApp, or Messenger — then drop the file into the import screen and the keepsake builds in about a minute.

Privacy, plainly

The export itself never leaves your device — it's read right there in your browser, the same way a photo opens on your computer. To write the handful of captions that need real words (your busiest year, your first exchange, the phrase you didn't know you repeated), we send a much smaller slice to our server: your most-used words and phrases, counts and rhythms (who texts more, your streaks, your busiest hour), and a very small handful of sample messages — your first few texts and your most recent. Not the export file, not your full conversation. Read exactly what we send →

Questions

What is Story of Us?

Story of Us (storyofus.app) is a web app that turns your iMessage, WhatsApp, or Messenger chat history into a private keepsake you read on screen — a short page built from the patterns in your own words, ready in about a minute. Your chat export is read in your browser and never uploaded; you can download the keepsake as a PDF and print it yourself.

Can we really make this during wedding week?

Yes — once your export is ready, the keepsake builds in about a minute. WhatsApp and iMessage exports take a few minutes from your own device; Messenger is the slow one, since Meta has to prepare your message-storage download and a long history can take a while. Request it early in wedding week and the whole thing fits into a quiet evening the night before.

Is it a physical gift that ships?

No — nothing ships. It's a private page the two of you read on screen; download it as a PDF afterward and print it at home or a print shop if you want something to wrap or put on the memory table.

Can we read it at the rehearsal dinner?

You could — read a page aloud, or print a few pages for the memory table. The PDF is yours; once it's built you can share it with whoever you like.

Which chat app works — iMessage, WhatsApp, Messenger?

All three. Follow the step-by-step export guide for whichever app holds your history, then drop the exported file into the matching import screen.

What do you actually see of our messages?

The export is read in your own browser, never uploaded. A small slice — your most-used words and phrases, counts, and a handful of sample messages — is sent to write the captions. Read exactly what we send on the privacy page.

How is this different from a printed chat book?

A printed chat book reprints your conversation as a physical book — the provider lays it out, prints and ships it, with their own lead times and pricing. This is a short on-screen keepsake built from patterns in your own words, ready in about a minute, that you print yourself if you want something to hand over.
