What is a chat keepsake?

A chat keepsake is a short, private page built from your own message history — the pet names, rituals, busiest hours and phrases hiding in years of texts with one person. Unlike a raw chat print, it tells the story inside the messages; unlike a printed chat book, nothing is bound or shipped. You make it in about a minute from a chat export, read it on screen, and can download it as a PDF.

Here is what the term means, plainly: a chat keepsake takes the conversation you’ve been having for years — the good-mornings, the logistics, the 2 a.m. check-ins — and turns it into something short you can actually read, instead of an archive nobody opens. Not the messages themselves. What the messages add up to.

What goes inside one

Software reads the export of your conversation and notices the patterns a person scrolling would miss: the pet name that began as a typo, the phrase one of you reaches for without thinking, your busiest month, the hour you text each other most, the streaks and rhythms of years of talking. Those become a short page of cards — your own vocabulary, noticed and arranged. Nothing is invented; if it wasn’t in your messages, it isn’t in the keepsake.

What it isn’t

It’s not a raw print of the chat — printing a conversation gives you the verbatim record, every message in order, which is a different thing and sometimes exactly what you want. How one gets made

Every keepsake starts with the same thing: an export of the conversation. On WhatsApp, you export the chat from your phone — a text transcript, either a .txt file or that same text inside a .zip. On iMessage, the history lives in a Mac’s chat.db. On Messenger, it’s a message-storage download from account settings. Drop the file into the importer on your laptop — it’s read right there in your browser, never uploaded — and the keepsake is ready in about a minute.
