What you'll need
Open the conversation with your partner, then export it without media — on iPhone, tap their name at the top and scroll to Export Chat; on Android, use the ⋮ menu → More → Export chat. WhatsApp hands you a .zip; get it onto your computer however's easiest (AirDrop or Mail on iPhone, Drive or Gmail on Android), then drop it straight in. Privacy, plainly
The export itself never leaves your device — it's read right there in your browser, the same way a photo opens on your computer. To write the handful of captions that need real words (your busiest year, your first exchange, the phrase you didn't know you repeated), we send a much smaller slice to our server: your most-used words and phrases, counts and rhythms (who texts more, your streaks, your busiest hour), and a very small handful of sample messages — your first few texts and your most recent. Where this doesn't work
- Built for one-on-one chats — a WhatsApp group export won't resolve into a clean two-person story.
- Export without media — including photos and videos makes for a much larger zip than the app needs, and media itself isn't used.
- Very long-running chats are sometimes capped by WhatsApp's own export limits on very old messages; whatever the export includes is what the keepsake is built from.

Do I need a computer to export from WhatsApp?
No — the export itself happens entirely on your phone. A computer is only needed afterward, to open the .zip in a browser and drop it in.
Should I include media in the export?
No — choose "Without Media" when exporting. Photos and videos aren't used and only make the file larger to move around.
Does this work for WhatsApp group chats?
It's built for one-on-one relationships. A group export usually won't produce a clean two-person keepsake.
Is the .zip file itself sent to your servers?
No. It's read directly in your browser. Only phrases, counts, and a small handful of sample messages are sent for the captions — read exactly what we send on the privacy page.
Can I use this on Android and iPhone both?
Yes — the export steps differ slightly by platform, but both produce the same .zip format the import screen accepts.
